“Most comfortable bed that my husband and I have ever slept on in a hotel. The room was very clean and we loved the separate tub and shower. Hotel was within walking distant of the Superdome, Jackson Square and the French Market & Bourbon Street. Can't wait to go back. Will for sure stay here again.”

“I go to New Orleans all the time, so I've stayed in many hotels. This is by far the best one yet! It's not on a busy street, easy to find and get there. The customer service was great! John at the desk was oustanding! We put the "do not disturb" sign up to sleep in, and the housekeeping ladies left towels and soap for us in a bag in case we needed them. We never had to request a thing! Wireless was free in the room, and they had computers to use downstairs. The room was great! Clean, no smells, great bed! The bathroom had no problems, no mold. If I had to say something bad about it, the self-parking basement garage was a littel tight. But, you can't beat $20 for parking in the city, and it was in the basement and watched with cameras. I WILL be staying here again!”

"For a four day stay (2 rooms - 4 adults) the hotel was very nice. Short on all the bells and whistles of a full featured hotel. However, the location and proximity to local entertainment and restaurants more than made up for it. The price is also reflective of the modest amenities. Having a Starbucks in the lobby is also a really attractive feature for those who love coffee in the morning after a night out of town. Many complained about the lack of (or fluctuating hote water, but we never noticed that at all. The inner rooms are small and not the most comfortable with very little shelf space. But again, for the price the room was excellent as a place to flop. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms very clean. Also nice that all rooms were equipped with iron and hair dryers!"

"Away from the crowds of the French Quarter this was a perfect location, easily accessible to the street cars and an easy walk to Bourbon Street and the rest of the French Quarter. When we checked in there was no king room available, so we ended up with a double room. The room was facing the street and a loading dock of the hotel across the street so it was very loud during the night and early morning.

 The beds were very comfortable and the shower was great. Two days in we asked if a king had become available and sure enough it did and we were able to switch rooms. All king rooms are located on the inside of the building so the window does not face outside, which is something I usually hate, but the room was so quiet that it was a great trade off. The king room was slightly smaller than the double room, but just as comfortable. Free Wi-Fi is a plus. There is a little cafe in the lobby that brews Starbucks coffee (but it is not actually a Starbucks), the coffee was good and they had some fruit and yogurt you can buy. However on the corner there is a Subway so you could get a cheap egg sandwich for a quick bite. The staff was friendly and helpful and they will hold your luggage for you once you check out if you have time before heading to the airport. It was a great place to stay and I would stay there again.

"Earlier this year, I attended my first academic conference as a graduate student: the annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association held in New Orleans. This trip marked several other firsts for me: my first time visiting New Orleans, my first time visiting Louisiana, and my first time flying (I admit I had the airplane breakup scenes from Lost in my head). I was late in making my travel arrangements due to a lack of funds at the time and no doubt some procrastination. By the time I did get around to finding a hotel, the deadline to get the special group rate at the hotel hosting the conference had passed. It would have been too high even with the discount, so I was left to look elsewhere. I wanted something reasonably priced and within walking distance of the conference. Using Travelocity, I was able to secure a package that included round-trip airfare through Delta and a few nights at the Wyndham Garden Baronne Plaza hotel. I ended up being very satisfied with my lodging decision.

For one thing, the Wyndham Garden Baronne Plaza boasts an excellent location within the New Orleans Central Business District. This puts it within walking distance of the French Quarter, the casino, the Mississippi River, Jackson Square, shops, restaurants (I recommend a restaurant called Mother’s), other hotels and conference centers, etc. There is a paid shuttle service that can take you from and to the airport. 

Not wanting to deal with traffic in a city I had never been to before and not wanting to pay for parking, I used this option. One thing to note is that, despite the name of the hotel being Wyndham Garden Baronne and Baronne Street being the street listed in its address, the entrance is actually on Common Street. I found this out the hard way. Forgetting how many turns I had made that morning to get to the conference, I ended up getting lost one night around 10:30, on foot, by myself, walking the length of Baronne Street twice before realizing that I was looking for the hotel in the wrong place.

The hotel itself was nice with a spacious, attractive interior decorated in Art Deco style. Free wifi is available. If that doesn’t work, you can use the business center for free (although I had trouble getting the Internet to work on the first night, which was the night I really needed to use it). 

There is no pool, but I wouldn’t have used it anyways. There was a fitness center, however that was a decent size. I didn’t see any evidence of a free breakfast or even little things like free donuts or coffee, but I wasn’t too concerned as there were refreshments served at the conference. There are two on-site restaurants, however. I didn’t get a chance to eat at the café, but I did get a chance to eat at Yokohama Sushi where I had the teriyaki chicken. I’ve noticed that teriyaki chicken can be hit or miss at Asian restaurants, but it was pretty decent here. 

It also came with a salad with ginger dressing and soup, both of which I liked. It’s still very overpriced, though.

I was impressed with the service. I dealt briefly with several staff members at the front desk during my time there (checking in, checking out, asking for a wakeup call, getting change for the vending machines, etc.). Every time, the staff member was friendly and helpful. I also had no problem with the housekeeping staff. Each night, I returned to my room to find my bed made, the dirty towels removed from the bathroom and replaced with clean towels, the garbage emptied, and new coffee, creamer, sugar, and bottles of water. The used coffee pod was always removed from the coffee maker. Mind you, I didn’t do anything like surreptitiously leave a piece of string on the carpet to make sure the floor was vacuumed (I’ve heard of people doing that), but I was certainly satisfied.

I was mostly satisfied with my room. It came with many of the amenities you’d expect from a hotel that is at least decent. Immediately on my left as I entered the room were two bottles of water, plenty of cups, and coffee maker that, get this, actually made good coffee instead of the bland, watery crap you often get from in-room coffee makers. The room came with a 32” flat screen TV getting a good assortment of channels. It also had a clock radio with buttons allowing you to switch to pre-programmed stations by genre; there was no rock station programmed, though. There was also a fairly large desk and desk chair (although it was one of those chairs that leaned back too far, making you feel like you’re about to flip over). There was no microwave or refrigerator, though.

The bed came with a comfortable pillow-top mattress and soft pillows, but the bedding was too heavy. Instead of having regular sheets, it had this heavy sheet-blanket hybrid along with a standard comforter. This created a problem for me. It was too cold to not cover up with the blanket-sheet or to use only it to cover up with, but, being hot natured, covering up with both it and the comforter was way too hot. My only recourse was to turn the air on while I slept covered with the blanket and comforter even though it was early January and quite chilly outside. The bathroom was also nice with a satisfactory amount of space, newer furnishings, and a massaging shower head. It was stocked with complimentary toiletries, including massaging bath soap with a nice fragrance (I generally don’t like scented soaps). The towels were actually pretty soft (sometimes, it seems like hotels are either too scared or too cheap to use fabric softener). There was also a hairdryer.

According to the hotel’s website, the hotel itself has only been there since 1998, but the building has been there since the 1930s. This may explain some of the issues with space and layout I had, but did also give it some charm not seen in newer hotels. For example, instead of the TV being in front of the bed, it was at like a 45 degree angle from the bed. While it had plenty of space for me and would have been good for another person, adding anymore would have been pushing it. One place this is evident is the closet, which was smaller than what you often see in newer hotels, although it actually felt like an actual closet instead of a rack somewhere off to the side. Even better, it actually had enough hangers for me to hang four days’ worth of pants and shirts.

All in all, I was very pleased with my stay at the Wyndham Garden Baronne Plaza. Yes, there were some problems, but they were more than outweighed by the positives. I think I would give this hotel 4.5 stars if I could. The hotel satisfied my needs for the trip and at a reasonable price considering its great location ($85 or so for the first two nights). Therefore, I round up my rating to five stars and give it my recommendation. If you’re traveling to New Orleans, you should definitely consider the Wyndham Garden Baronne Plaza."
